ASEM Senior Officials' Meeting, one of the nine side events of the 11th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit in Mongolia, has been held in Ulaanbaatar on May 12-13.
The meeting was attended by over 170 representatives from 51 ASEM partner countries, the European Union (EU), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF). "Mongolia, as the host of the 11th ASEM Summit, attaches special importance to this meeting of senior officials," said the State Secretary of the Foreign Ministry and the Head of ASEM Office D. Gankhuyag on his opening remark, "which will focus on the future of ASEM, on celebration of its 20th anniversary and on other issues related to the preparation for the Ulaanbaatar Summit, including discussions of the draft Ulaanbaatar Declaration and Chair’s Statement".
During the Senior Officials' Meeting, the officials discussed commitments to improve connectivity between Asia-Europe peoples, 20th anniversary of ASEM, and cooperation status in 16 fields, and the direction of the future 10 years. Also the officials held discussions to delineate the Chair's Statement, which will be available at the end of the 11th ASEM Summit, as well as the Ulaanbaatar Declaration.
The ASEM Senior Officials hold regular meetings for coordination work on ASEM activities, including reaching consensus on decisions to make at the ASEM Summit and Ministerial meetings. Another Senior Officials' Meeting in Ulaanbaatar is expected to be held in July 12-14.
