Mongolia has participated in the 17th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit of the Council of Heads of State, which is scheduled from 8-9th June, as an observer country.
Regarding the SCO as an important platform to engage in the regional multilateral cooperation, Mongolia became the observer nation of the SCO in 2004, in the scope of the country’s foreign policy to actively participate in the political and economic activities in the Asia and Pacific region. Since gaining the observer status, Mongolia has been actively partaking in the SCO Summit of the Council of Heads of State.
On Jun 9, the President Elbegdorj spoke at an expanded format meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Astana, the Republic of Kazakhstan. In his remarks, President Elbegdorj noted: “We are glad to see that the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has become a permanent international organization, expanding and embracing various sectors including security, trade, economy, culture, education, science and humanitarian spheres.
Mongolia is interested to collaborate with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in fighting terrorism and drug trafficking. We are pleased to support the anti-drug strategy for 2017–2022, which has just been adopted during the current SCO Summit. I believe that the fruitful cooperation and partnership between the countries participating in the activities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation will further contribute not only Mongolia’s development, but to the peace, stability and prosperity of the entire world”.
Following, the President of Mongolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj met with the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. At the meeting, the parties exchanged views on expanding the bilateral relations between Mongolia and the Russian Federation. President Elbegdorj highlighted that the Russia’s investment in Mongolia is increasing and this is important for the development of mutual ties. He also noted: “All relations established with Russia in all spheres are good relations with Mongolia. All investments from Russia are also good. Mongolia and Russia have always enjoyed good friendly relations and we must not have any issues pertaining to our bilateral relationship”.
The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin mentioned that he is glad to see the President of Mongolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj and discuss issues related to the mutual relations and cooperation, during the SCO Summit of the Council of Heads of State. He stressed that there is quite a lot in terms of quantity and areas of cooperation between the two countries.
Moreover, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit of the Council of Heads of State in Astana, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the President Elbegdorj attended the official opening ceremony of the international specialized exhibition Astana Expo 2017.
Kazakhstan won the right to host the Expo 2017 from the Bureau International des Expositions in 2012, and in 2014, the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev invited Mongolia to Astana.
The International Exposition Astana Expo 2017 themed "Future Energy" is scheduled to take place between June 10 and September 10, 2017. The Astana Expo 2017 has attracted delegates from 100 countries and 20 different organizations. In the frame of the Astana Expo 2017, business forums on 20 different topics, national day, and cultural events are scheduled to take place. The organizers are expecting to welcome a total of five million guests in the upcoming three months of the Expo.
