Cabinet resolves on construction of three strategic roads

During its regular meeting on June 14, Wednesday, the Cabinet agreed on construction of three roads, and assigned National Development Agency to choose contractors in compliance with the relevant laws and regulations.

The three projects on project framing-build-operate-transfer condition will construct roads connecting Ulaanbaatar – Darkhan (204.6 km), Tavantolgoi – Gashuunsukhait (250 km) and Baruun-Urt – Bichigt (272 km).

The Ulaanbaatar – Darkhan road was built in 1970-1980, and was repaired in 1997-2000. The Mongolia-Russia-China Economic Corridor program reflects the utilization of  a transit transport route Ulan-Ude – Kyakhta – Altanbulag – Darkhan – Ulaanbaatar – Sainshand – Zamiin-Uud – Erlian – Tianjin. The Cabinet 2016-2020 action plan also reflects the objective, and the transit transport is planned to be launched January, next year. Therefore, the Ulaanbaatar – Darkhan road will be renovated as a four-lane road until 2020.

The Tavantolgoi-Gashuunsukhait road will be reconstructed in order to preserve the gobi region ecosystem and increase road transport. The road is used by 1000-3000 vehicles per day. The Cabinet sees that reconstruction of the road will reduce accidents, increase transport 2.5 times, increase coal export, create jobs and reduce poverty in the locality. The construction will be executed from 2017 to 2019.

The Cabinet targeted to construct the Baruun-Urt – Bichigt road in its 2016-2020 action plan. Construction of the road will be an infrastructural guarantee for the development of Bichigt-Zuunkhatavch border station. The road construction is planned for execution in 2017-2020.
