Orkhon Purevdorj, an international master of sports, captured a gold medal in the women’s -63 kg contest of the 2017 World Wrestling Championships which kicked off August 21in Paris, France.
Our wrestler from the “Aldar” sports club and “Avarguud” academy defeated her rivals from India, Sweden, and Nigeria. In the semifinals, she beat Jackeline Renteria of Colombia, a twice Olympic bronze medalist. At the gold medal contest, P.Orkhon defeated Yuliya Tkach of Ukraine, a 2014 World champion with scores 6:3.
This is the fourth gold medal won by Mongolian women, and the seventh gold medal by Mongolian national team. Before the 2017 World Championships, an Olympic bronze medalist S.Battsetseg grabbed two gold medals in 2010 and 2015 in the women’s -63 kg division, while S.Tserenchimed claimed a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships in the women’s -60 kg contest. Male wrestlers collected three gold medals in 1974 and 1975. Besides gold medals, Mongolia captured 20 silver and 29 bronze medals overall throughout the World Wrestling Championships since the first participation from 1963.
P.Orkhon is considered as the present time’s powerful wrestler in the world. She also beat S.Battsetseg in the previous competitions—the 2017 National Championships and the 2017 Mongolia Open international tournament. She is being coached by Ts.Khosbayar and Ts.Tsogtbayar.
