ULAANBAATAR (GoGo Mongolia) - According to State Policy on Energy of Mongolia, the installed capacity of renewables is to reach 20 percent of the total energy mix by the year 2023. The Sainshand Wind Park Project, which will bring on line, pursuant to the above-referenced policy, the third wind park of the country in Dornogobi province, has held its launching ceremony on Oct 16.
The launching ceremony of the project was attended by representatives of the Government of Mongolia, Plenipotentiary Ambassadors of Germany, France and China in Mongolia, representatives of sizeable foreign companies- project stakeholders, international development banks, contractors, relevant authorities and national counterparts.
Located 460 km south-east of Ulaanbaatar in the Gobi Desert, the wind farm project is sponsored by French energy leader ENGIE, German project developer Ferrostaal, Danish Climate Investment Fund (DCIF) and Mongolian entrepreneur, Radnaabazar Davaanyam, with long-term financing provided by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The 486-hectare project site is located at the distance of 5km from Sainshand and 250km from Zamiin-Uud, both deemed as favorable from the infrastructure perspective. This advantageous physical location will indeed provide cost efficiencies in terms of transport and logistics costs. As result the of implementation of this project, a total of USD117.5mln in foreign direct investment will flow into the country, while significant contribution will be made towards attainment of green economy and sustainable development objectives.
Once completed, the project will provide power supply to over 100,000 households through its installed capacity of 55MW of electric power generation, which will be based on the use of 25 2.2MW Vestas turbines deemed as most appropriate for the climatic conditions of this land and modern day requirements of wind-based power generation.
Besides this, the clean energy generation will save an estimated 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, 2 million cubic meters of clean water and 50mln tons of raw coal consumption.
The Sainshand wind farm is being built by China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, and will use 25 Vestas V110 2.2 MW turbines to deliver up to 55 MW of clean energy that will save an estimated 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. It follows three years of wind surveys to measure the high-yield winds in the area. The average wind speeds per second at the site are ideal for onshore wind energy.
The construction of the project started in August this year and completion is projected by end of 2018.
