Prime Minister U. Khurelsukh visited the meat processing factories of Makh Market and Makh Impex on November 28. According to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry, there are over 40 meat processing factories in Mongolia but only a few of them conduct year-round operations.
As of November 2017, 21.5 tons of meat (valued at 108 billion MNT) has been exported to Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Japan, Iran, and Qatar, five times more than exports in 2016. The Premier noted that the current volume of export can be seven times higher than last year's output.
According to 2016 census data, Mongolia has 61.5 million livestock, including 27.8 million sheep, 25.5 million goats, 3.6 million horses, 4 million cows, and 400,000 camels. The Premier noted that there are a handful of countries that have a demand for horse meat, and that Mongolian producers should focus on preparing horse meat for export. He added, “In order to diversify our economy, agriculture, agronomy, and SMEs should be the next priorities for Mongolia. Cabinet will willingly cooperate with domestic meat producers.”
