If I had a time machine, I would go back to Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1985 to watch the legendary rock band Queen. They took to the stage to perform their most popular songs, including ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘We Are the Champions” and ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’. Everyone in the audience was cheering, their hands up in the air. Although the concert wasn’t that long, it remains one of the most iconic moments of Queen.
It’s probably unnecessary to list their endless stream of awards to prove they are legendary. There is no doubt that they proved enough in the last 40 years with their work. But not everyone knows how the band came to be.
Queen is a British rock band formed in London in 1971 and signed a contract with EMI in 1973, releasing their self-titled album, ‘Queen’ that year. In 1974, they released their second album, ‘Queen II’, and went on their first tour across the U.K.
In 1975, Queen first performed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ from their album ‘A Night at the Opera’ on the stage of the legendary ‘Hammersmith Odeon’. From the time it was released, the song had immense success, leading the British music billboard for 9 consecutive weeks and performing well overseas. A few years later, Freddie Mercury performed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with the Royal Ballet, surprising many with how well pop music synchronized with the classical performing arts.
Lead guitarist Brian May composed over 20 songs, including some of the band’s most popular ones, such as ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘The Show Must Go On’. He is considered one of the best guitarists of all time. Roger Taylor, most famous for being the drummer of the band, is also a singer and composer. He composed most of the albums and even released a solo album later on. Brian May and Roger Taylor have toured around the world for about 20 years.
It’s impossible to imagine Queen without Freddie Mercury. He once said, “I won’t become a rock star. I will become a legend.” And indeed, he did. When he came onto the stage, there was no need for any kind of lights or backup dancers—Freddie, is all that was needed. Everyone used to love him back then.
Even today, he still is Bassist John Deacon composed some of the hit songs, such as ‘Another One Bites The Dust’, ‘I Want To Break Free’ and ‘You’re My Best Friend’. He performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992 and collaborated with Elton John at ‘The Show Must Go On’ concert in 1997, which was the last concert he ever played with the Queen members.
It’s quite hard to perform at a concert without the lead singer. The band collaborated with Paul Rogers, but from 2014 the role of the lead singer has been taken over by young artist Adam Lambert.
When Lambert comes on stage and starts to sing, it feels as if Mercury is happily looking down from heaven. Although no one ever could replace Mercury, Queen chose him. Lambert didn’t want to completely change already popular songs or try to copy Mercury, but he is praised for taking his big responsibility seriously and making the wonderful songs come to life in his own way.
20 years have already passed without Freddie. But we don’t need time machines anymore, because those years remain more important than pure gold in our hearts. If God does exist, thank you for sending Queen into this world.
