The Government and capital authorities have discussed and implemented many projects and programs with multiple billions of MNT for many years; however, the air pollution in Ulaanbaatar reached a disaster level this winter.
Although the citizens have been suffering from air pollution for several years, a case of a student collapsing in their classroom had never been heard until now. Therefore, the President gave a warning to dismiss the Parliament if the issue is not solved soon. During his speech at the Parliament session last week, the President addressed “I will submit a request to dismiss the Parliament if no serious actions are taken against the air pollution”. Additionally, the opposition party made an announcement that the Parliament must disband if the decision on tax raise is not revoked.
On Wednesday, the President gave an interview to two television channels and said “The public is losing trust towards the authorities. Many complaints have been issued already. Several requests on disbanding the Parliament were also among them. I made my statement on the Parliament’s session. I will support those requests.”
Unfortunately, the attendance of members during the Parliamentary session to discuss air pollution was not enough. Furthermore, none of the National Security Council’s order issued last year to the Parliament, Cabinet and capital authorities have been fulfilled; but instead, the Parliament is discussing temporary measures, such as stoves, masks and air purifiers.
The President added “The air pollution has to be solved alongside poverty and unemployment. Satellite cities near the capital needs to be established. If this solution is not going to work, let us employ the unemployed and develop vocational centers.”
