According to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, the meat exports reached 27.8 thousand tons as of December 25, 2017. The total meat export totalled 7 times higher than the five-year average and three times the amount of previous year. As a result, the total revenue of meat exports reached approximately MNT 140 billion.
Mongolian Customs General Administration reported that horse meat formed nearly 90 percent of meat exports, while goat meat, beef and mutton exports totalled 3 tons.
As of the end of December, Mongolia exported 24.9 thousand tons of horse meat to People’s Republic of China, Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and Japan. Furthermore, heat-processed canned meat export totalled 2 thousand tons.
Mongolia’s trade is heavily dependent on mining-industry. Therefore, the main economic objective is to diversify export products, especially the agriculture products. According to a study of National Council for Food Safety, Mongolia can export 27.9 thousand tons of beef, 43.6 thousand tons of horse meat in 2018. On the other hand, the Government set no limits to mutton and goat meat exports. Considering the current resources, a total of 61.4 tons of mutton and 47 thousand tons of goat meat can be exported in 2018.
As of December 2017, eight companies have a special license to export horse meat to PRC and six companies have the license for mutton and goat meat. The related ministry reported that a total of 29 companies have special license to export meat to Russia.
