Mongolia and India agreed to advance bilateral relations in a number of areas at the 6th Meeting of Joint Committee for Cooperation, held on April 25 in Ulaanbaatar.
Minister of Foreign Affairs D.Tsogtbaatar and Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj co-chaired the joint committee meeting, which is a high-level consultative mechanism between the two countries. The last meeting was held in New Delhi in 2016.
At the meeting, the sides discussed a wide range of issues concerning bilateral cooperation and reviewed the progress of projects and programs that were announced during the 2015 visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mongolia.
The sides agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in a variety of sectors and spheres including politics, security, defense, trade, investment, information technology, communications, agriculture, education, health and culture and continue to support each other at the international and regional level.
The Governments of Mongolia and India discussed and reached agreement on a number of matters including mutual visits to be paid in the near future and continuation of the ‘Nomadic Elephant’ joint military exercise, India’s participation in the ‘Khaan Quest’ international peacekeeping exercise and bilateral border security cooperation.
The sides exchanged views on intensification of the bilateral strategic partnership in economic sector. While stressing the need to expand bilateral trade, especially increase Mongolia’s export, the sides agreed to promote bilateral private sector cooperation and increase the frequency of bilateral trade expositions and business forums.
The sides agreed to intensify the implementation of the Oil Refinery Project, to be carried out with a USD 1 billion loan from India and in this regard, to reach agreement on the project’s detailed feasibility study in the near future.
The sides discussed the broadening of bilateral cooperation and connections at the government level and agreed to regularize the Consultative Meeting between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and activate the networking between mining experts.
The Government of India actively contributes to the development and capacity building of Mongolian students and civil servants through scholarship programs. Mongolia appreciated India’s willingness to provide further assistance in training Mongolian government officials and civil servants. India agreed on training young Mongolian diplomats in international law.
The sides agreed on drafting a roadmap for bilateral cooperation in information and communication technologies. The sides also agreed to activate the projects on building an Information Technology and Outsourcing Center and establishing a Mongolian-Indian Friendship School in Mongolia.
The Indian side backed intensification of bilateral press cooperation including a program to send 10 Mongolian journalists to India every year.
The sides also agreed to enforce bilateral health cooperation, especially in traditional medicine.
