Five mining companies, including SouthGobi Sands, MAK, Chinkhua MAK, Usukh Zoos, and Javkhlant Ord, operate in Gurvantes soum of Umnugobi Province and explore energy coal.
The total export volume of these companies has totaled 4.7 million tons of coal since the beginning of 2018, an increase of 3.2 percent compared to the same period in 2017. The companies have generated 11.1 billion MNT in state revenue.
In order to increase their export volume, the companies have renovated the border checkpoint, establishing four gateways for coal transportation and building a paved road. SouthGobi Sands exports coal after processing it through a coal washing system and re-uses 90.2 percent of its treated wastewater.
MAK is in the process of building a coal-washing plant, which is expected be commissioned in the second half of 2018. Minister of Mining and Heavy Industry D. Sumiyabazar noted, “We have to be careful about environmental issues. It is better to use the least amount of water as possible and introduce environmentally-friendly technologies to operations.”
