Following heavy rains in late August 2025, fecal contamination has been detected in water samples taken from the Selbe and Dund rivers in Ulaanbaatar and in soil samples collected along their banks.
Laboratory tests identified infectious bacteria, coliforms, E. coli, and Salmonella spp. in the river water samples, while Salmonella spp. was also found in the soil samples. Authorities say these findings indicate that wastewater and openly discarded waste were washed into the rivers during the floods.
The National Center for Public Health is warning residents to take precautions: strictly maintain personal hygiene, wash hands frequently, and avoid entering floodwater if have open wounds.
