At the invitation of Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, Australian Governor-General Samantha Mostyn arrived for a state visit on September 4-9, 2025. Governor-General Samantha Mostyn and her husband Simeon Beckett were welcomed at Chinggis Khaan International Airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs B. Battsetseg and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Commonwealth of Australia to Mongolia Leo Zeng.
The visit, the first by an Australian Governor-General to Mongolia in 31 years, is seen as an important opportunity to expand and deepen ties with Australia, a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region and one of Mongolia’s “third neighbours.”
During the visit, President U.Khurelsukh and Governor-General Mostyn are expected to hold an official meeting to discuss strengthening cooperation in politics, trade, investment, education and agriculture, boosting people-to-people exchanges, and enhancing collaboration at regional and international levels. Both sides aim to confirm steps toward upgrading bilateral relations to a “Comprehensive Partnership.”
Governor-General Mostyn will also review Australian-supported projects and programmes in Mongolia and meet representatives of the business community. Mongolia and the Commonwealth of Australia established diplomatic relations on September 15, 1972. More than 22,000 Mongolian citizens currently reside in Australia.
