Building No. 207, a 13-storey reinforced-concrete block in front of the Dunjingarav shopping centre in the 26th khoroo of Bayanzurkh district, has been fully demolished following structural damage caused by a gas-vehicle explosion in January, 2024.
After the January blast, experts determined the building’s structure was compromised. The capital city governor and Mayor Kh.Nyambaatar decided the building must be demolished and rebuilt. Although tenders for the demolition were announced four times, no qualified bidder came forward. The city therefore contracted Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling Plant, a locally-owned enterprise, which completed the safe demolition in 115 days.
City officials say demolition costs will initially be covered from the Ulaanbaatar city budget to ensure public safety. Following the outcome of legal proceedings, authorities intend to recover costs from any party found legally responsible. When the City Council approved the capital’s 2026 budget, it also approved funding for the reconstruction of Building No. 207; preparations are underway to launch a tender for the new construction contract.
