The 13th international mining exhibition "Mongolia mining-2024" continues. In addition to mining experts and entrepreneurs, representatives of mining ministries and companies from other countries attend the exhibition.
We had an interview with the Cuban Delegation of Mr. Jorge Hernandez Pavón, Director of the Cuban mining business group GEOMINSAL Center, and Mr. Juan Carlos Rivero Olas, official of the Mining Division of the Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines. (MINEM)
Is it your first time coming to Mongolia? Please share your impressions.
Yes, it is our first time to Mongolia. We realized that Mongolia is a beautiful country with friendly and hospitable people. It is amazing how Mongolia has grown in the last few years, in particular its capital.
It is very curious why you came from so far away to be interested in Mongolian mining. Would you like to get more information about which minerals of our country? Copper, coal or gold?
We came to your country to attend the Mongolian Mining Week and MinePro 2024 that are very important international events on mining in Mongolia and in Asia.
Our aim is to meet International and Mongolian suppliers of technology, equipment and machinery for the mining and minerals industry, as well as to seek potential Mongolian and International partners for association with Cuban companies to explore and exploit Cuban mineral resources.
We also came to know the interesting comprehensive policy and experience of the government and of Mongolian public and private companies in association with Foreign Investors for the growth and diversification of the mining sector that has successfully contributed to achieving a surplus balance of trade, the balance of payments and fiscal balance of your country in 2023.
What mineral resources does Cuba have?
In Cuba there are more than 9 000 deposits of metallic and non-metallic industrial rocks and minerals for use in several sectors of the economy and the industry with the advantages that most of them are close to road and rail transport routes and seaports and can be mined in the open pit that it has much lower cost comparing with the underground mining.
Cuba is the world's 9th largest nickel producer of and 5th of cobalt and it is home to the world's fifth largest nickel reserve and the fourth largest world cobalt reserves. Cuba also has the world's largest lead-producing surface mine.
Our island also has great quantities of other metallic minerals such copper, iron, chrome, gold and silver, as well as other non-metallic and salt such as clays for cement and for ceramics, silica sand for glass, garnet (for abrasives), plaster (for the pharmaceutical industry and light paneling), zeolite (fertilizers, filter material and animal feed supplement), salt (Punta Alegre salt dome, for chemistry, pharmaceutical, industrial and possible Lithium), feldspar, marble, among others.
What is the economic benefit of Cuba's mining industry and mineral resources?
Although Cuba is mainly a service economy, mining is an important and growing sector of its economy. Nickel and cobalt are the main exports of Cuba in the área of goods that depending of the world market prices may represent thousands of Millions of US dollars or at least hundreds of Millions per year.
The Cuban minerals are also great contributors to Cuban industries such as steel, stainless steel, iron bars, industrial metal structures, cement, fertilizers, chemicals, tiles and tiles and sanitary furniture, copper wires, and construction industries.
What do you think are the opportunities for our two countries /Mongolia and Cuba/ to cooperate in the mining industry?
Cuba can share its experience on its policies of diversification and value-adding industrialization of minerals and there are a lot a opportunities for public and private Mongolian and International companies to associate with Cuban companies to invest in mining and industrial-related sectors in Cuba and /or the provisions of services related to this sector.
Cuba has already several important successful Joint Ventures with Foreign companies like Sherrit International from Canada that have been present in Cuba for more than 30 years in gas power plants, nickel and cobalt mines and processing plants, as well as oil and gas Development, Trafigura (Singapore-registered, Swiss-headquartered mining and oil trading), Melbana Antilles and Gold Limited’s Energy of Australia, SONAGOL from Angola, among others.
Besides the advantages of being Cuba the biggest Caribbean island and the political stability of the country, the existence of a highly qualified labor force and the availability of some idle or underutilized industrial facilities that in many cases do not require large investments, but few USD million, Cuba also offer several different incentives such as exemptions or reductions from corporate tax on investments and reinvestments, of the tax on the use of labor, income tax, export custom duties and import custom duties for technology, equipment and inputs for the investment, etc.
Some of the Cuban mining projects that are seeking foreign partners are safe investments, with high mineral content rates, mineral reserves for many years and secure income. For example, Project Colas Rojas, located in Moa, Holguin province, at Eastern Cuba, the residuals are from the acid-leaching process of the company Moa Nickel SA (deposits are estimated at 100 million tons and contain 49.5% Iron, as well as 6.32% aluminum oxide, among others) and Project Colas Negras, located in Nicaro, Holguin province, the residuals are from the ammoniac carbonate process of the nickel company Nicaro (deposits are estimated at 60 million tons, contains 50.5% Iron, among other minerals in lower quantities)
