52500 patients need to receive Hepatitis C treatment

Second meeting of the working group on developing the regulations and guidelines of the Hepatitis C virus treatment by the order of the Minister of Health and Sports G.Shiilegdamba was held yesterday.

Ministry of Health and Sports, Professional Physicians Association NGO, Pharmaceutical companies and public and private entities have joined forces for the C virus treatment.  During the first working group meeting Minister of Health and Sports G.Shiilegdamba ordered to develop the treatment guidelines and the second meeting discussed the reports of the guidelines.

Guideline directs the pharmaceutical companies on importing the medication ans safe storage, while for the physicians it states the stages of diagnosis of the disease and how to reach the patients in rural areas of the country and how to establish the treatment environment for the patients.

Moreover the research of the patients with active virus C has been conducted by the professional physicians in cooperation with the WHO. As of today there are 150 thousand patients carrying active virus C and 52,500 of them need to be treated immediately.

Patient with virus C usually has higher risk of cirrhosis, liver cancer and other health complications in 20 years after being diagnosed with the virus. Therefore, the working group aims to involve the 150 thousand patients as soon as possible in the nearest 5-6 years to reduce the risks of health complications over the years.

Working group is working on evaluation of the treatment costs associated with the immediate treatment needed for the 52,500 patients. During the working group meeting the Ombol Pharmaceuticals have made presentation on licensing process of Harvoni medication to treat the accute hepatitis C.

Virus C Treatment Guidelines developed by the working group is to be used as the main manual for the medical professionals in treating the condition in Mongolia.
