A team of researchers from the Prague Zoo and Mongolian scientists has successfully completed the task of selecting a site for the introduction of Przewalski’s horses or takhis in the eastern part of Mongolia.
A site named after Sumiin Khooloi (Valley of Monasteries), located in Khakhgol soum, Dornod province has been selected as a result of visiting the site in every season of the year and conducting various researches including plants, animals, insects, and parasites. Most of this land, which has an area of about 1700 sq.km, is included inside Numrug Strictly protected area.
Miroslav Bobek, Director of the Prague Zoo, said, “We came to the conclusion that Sumiin Khooloi and its vicinity are the most suitable places for introducing takhis as a result of research. In this site, the yield of grass is good, the condition of the land surface is good, there are few ticks, and the herders’ livestock graze is tens of kilometers away from the site”.
Sumiin Khooloi is the 4th site that takhis to be introduced after Goviin Ikh National Park, Hustai National Park, Khomiin Tal National Park, and it is located in the eastern part of Mongolia. The selection of the site for introduction of takhi has already been made, and the project Dorniin Takhi (Wild Horse to the East) enters the implementation phase.
Ganbaatar, the Executive Director of NGO “We Help Them to Survive Mongolia”, which will implement the project together with Prague Zoo, said “We prepare everything in close cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and other relevant authorities. And the government institutions of Mongolia are very interested in and support this project”.
After completing all the formalities, the project works will begin, preceding the construction of the base and acclimatization enclosures at the confluence of the Hook River (Degee River) and Southern Monastery Stream (Uvur sumiin gorkhi). At the same time, further scientific research will continue in the area of interest.
