First silver gerege discovered in Mongolia

In May 2024, a silver gerege, a historic diplomatic token from the Mongol Empire, was discovered by local residents A.Ansagan, Kh.Amanjol, and Ye.Amanbyek in the Ulaan Davaa area of Bulgan soum, Bayan-Ulgii province.

The transfer of the artifact to state ownership was facilitated in accordance with relevant laws by J.Otgonjargal, a citizen of Ulaanbaatar.

According to researchers, the silver gerege dates back to the Mongol Empire, particularly the era of the Great Yuan Dynasty. It bears an inscription in square script that reads:
“möngke tengri yin küčün dür qaɣan nere qutuɣtai boltuqai ken ülu buširegu aldaqu ükügü”, which translates as: “May the name of the khan be blessed; whoever disrespects it will die”.

On the outer edge surrounding the hole of the gerege, six Chinese characters are inscribed, meaning “Honorary mark, number 69”, a phrase believed to symbolize wisdom.

Only three similar gerege artifacts have previously been identified, in Russia and the United States, making this the first of its kind to be found within Mongolia. Scholars emphasize the need for further detailed study of this rare cultural relic.

The Ministry of Culture has urged all citizens to actively contribute to the preservation of Mongolia’s cultural heritage and prevent such treasures from being lost to history.
