On August 8, 2026, the initial commissioning operations of a new 70 MW thermal power plant being constructed by Raid Mongolia LLC in Sukhbaatar soum, Selenge province, began.
Minister of Energy B.Naidalaa said the plant, which is expected to be commissioned soon, will help address Mongolia’s shortage of electricity and heat capacity and reduce dependence on existing energy sources.
“This plant will make an important contribution to addressing the shortage of electricity and heat capacity. Congratulations to everyone involved in this project,” he said.
Located approximately 311 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar, the plant will consist of two boiler units, each equipped with a 35 MW turbine generator.
Once operational, the plant is expected to generate approximately 489 million kWh of electricity annually, with 440.2 million kWh supplied to the grid. It will also produce approximately 373,000 Gcal of heat per year.
Construction of the plant began on May 1, 2024, and it is scheduled to be commissioned by October 2026, ahead of the peak winter energy demand.
The plant is being constructed on a turnkey basis by Cambodia-based MITIME Group and is intended to meet the growing electricity and heating needs of Selenge province.
The project incorporates new equipment and technologies, including carbon chimneys, which will be used for the first time in Mongolia. According to the Ministry of Energy, the chimneys can be dismantled and reassembled and are considered an environmentally friendly technology.
