U.Khurelsukh: SCO member states should cooperate to overcome common challenges facing landlocked countries

Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, the President of Mongolia, participated as an observer in the extended session of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states in Astana, Republic of Kazakhstan, and gave a speech.

He noted that Mongolia is consistently implementing a peaceful, open, multi-pillared and independent foreign policy and has established diplomatic relations with all UN member states.

Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, the President of Mongolia, said:

With this multi-pillar foreign policy, Mongolia, as an Observer State of the SCO, has continuously held talks and high-level visits with Member States, Observer States, and Dialogue Partners of the SCO within bilateral and multilateral frameworks.

We will continue to cooperate with all SCO member countries in the fields of trade, investment, food, agriculture, mining, energy, industrialization, transport logistics, port infrastructure, environment, green development, tourism, information technology, and humanities.

Climate change, global warming, droughts and floods are facing disasters, causing significant damage to the environment and human society, and the importance of expanding cooperation aimed at reducing the risk of natural disasters.

Therefore, Mongolia is successfully implementing the “One Billion Trees” and “Food Supply and Security” National Campaigns to reduce climate change, slow global warming, desertification, and soil erosion, and increase the absorption of greenhouse gas and water supply, mentioning that as part of the efforts Mongolia is preparing to host the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in 2026.

In order to solve the common challenges and difficulties faced by landlocked countries, the importance of mutual understanding, cooperation, and a unified position of the SCO participating countries, we are calling for cooperation with the International Think Tank for Landlocked Developing Countries based in Ulaanbaatar.

Mongolia, based on its geographic location connecting Asia and Europe, is working on the goal of becoming a "Transit Mongolia" that is a hub for trade, tourism, transportation and logistics networks, freight traffic and services.

In this framework, special attention is paid to the development of extensive and mutually beneficial good-neighborly cooperation with Russia and China, major road, railway, energy, and tourism projects included in the "Mongolia-Russia-China Economic Corridor Program" and the natural gas pipeline project, which will run through Mongolian territory to supply natural gas to China from Russia.

At the 2024 Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, Heads of State of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan, Iran, Belarus, Turkiye, Azerbaijan, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkmenistan, and the Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres, as well as representatives from the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council, Islamic Organization for Food Safety, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Commonwealth of Independent States, Collective Security Treaty Organization, and Eurasian Economic Commission participated.
