Buddha Day to be held on June 11 as public holiday

This year, Buddha Day is celebrated on the 15th day of the first summer lunar month which falls on June 11 this year, and will be observed as a public holiday, in accordance with Mongolia’s Law on Public Holidays.

Buddha Day is significant for coinciding with three major events in the life of the Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and passing into nirvana. It is a sacred and revered day across the Buddhist world.

In many Buddhist countries, this day is marked with large-scale religious festivals, and is often declared a national day of non-violence. Alcohol sales and entertainment venues are typically suspended in observance of the holiday.

Mongolia has a long-standing tradition of honoring this day through prayers, temple visits, and acts of compassion. Though the tradition was disrupted for a time, it has been widely revived since 1990, with celebrations focused on promoting compassion, valuing wisdom, and preserving cultural heritage.

According to Buddhist teachings, meritorious deeds performed on this day are believed to yield immense spiritual benefit. People are encouraged to keep their body, speech, and mind pure and to dedicate the day to virtuous actions.
