World Horseback Archery Championships to be held in Taij Khairkhan

In accordance with a resolution of the Mongolian Government, the Nomad World Culture Festival is held annually on August 21-24. This year, for the first time, Mongolia will host the 17th World Horseback Archery Championships, in conjunction with the festival.

The event will take place free of charge in the 3rd khoroo, Nalaikh district, near Taij Khairkhan, offering the public a unique opportunity to witness this ancient and visually striking sport.

Currently, 38 countries across four continents are registered members of the World Archery Federation. More than 30 countries are expected to send athletes to the competition, and as of now, over 70 archers from 15 countries have already registered. Registration remains open until July 20.

Mongolia currently has 11 active horseback archery clubs, and the sport is growing in popularity, particularly among youth. While archery originated as a martial skill in ancient times, it has since evolved into a national sport that symbolizes Mongolian tradition and discipline.

Kim Yong-sol, President of the World Archery Federation, said  “Horseback archery is not just a sport, it is a form of cultural expression that requires great skill and patience. We are proud to help bring this tradition, which is deeply rooted in Mongolian history and culture, to the world stage.”

Kim also noted that efforts are underway to advocate for horseback archery's inclusion in the Olympic Games.
