G.Gangamurun: SMEs have launched their products in the Japanese market

-Professional equipments were provided in order to support small and medium enterprises and service providers -

Starting from this month, more than 20 local SMEs have started selling their products in the Japanese market through the popular website www.sto-ory.com. We’ve sat down with G.Gangamurun, Director of Ulaanbaatar City’s SMEs Support Center and discussed the opportunities opening up to the SMEs.

-Let's talk about the recent works and highlights of the SMEs Support Center?
-
We have established cooperations with a number of international organizations, rather than just operating within our budget. In cooperation with “HIS Mongolia” LLC, under one of the Memorandum of Understandings signed with about 15 organizations, we have started selling the products of Micro, Small and Medium enterprises and services to the Japanese market. After two months of preparation, we are pleased to announce the sales launch in the Japanese market starting from January 1, 2022 using the onlinec platform. Under the MoU signed in November, more than 170 products and services from more than 20 companies operating within our nine districts were placed on the www.sto-ory.com website.

In addition, the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have agreed to provide a grant of MNT 1 billion in equipments. Up to MNT 10 million will be provided to 33 citizens, businesses and organizations affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and in need of equipments. We also plan to feature the products from MSMEs in international exhibitions to be held in the United States and Canada in late February. Under the MoU with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), we are working to launch the products of micro, small and medium enterprises and service providers in the German market within the second quarter of this year.

-How many people use this e-commerce website?
-There is a large Japanese travel company called HIS. Rather than developing the tourism industry alone, it adds value to the country's main products. Therefore, HIS Mongolia LLC, the Mongolian branch of the company, aims to introduce the products of SMEs to the Japanese market and to compete in the international market as well. This company is one of the top ten companies in the country’s tourism industry. Products placed on the company’s www.sto-ory.com website can reach at least 50 million customers.

-What criterias were used to select the more than 20 companies that now sell their products on the website?
-Applications from citizens and businesses were received through the SMEs Support Centers in the nine districts. Applicants have certain requirements, such as where they get their raw materials from, how they process their final products, whether they meet the quality of export to the international markets, and whether their product is manufactured according to the MNS and ISO standards.

However, the product is placed and marketed on the online platform only if it meets the general requirements rather than the criteria. As of now we are placing the products of all the companies that have applied for the platform. We are providing free civil services such as marketing, product photo shoots, and translation services for products that meet the general requirements.

-How many citizens and companies have received the grants up to MNT 10 million?
-Due to our cooperation with international organizations, citizens and companies that applied for grants in accordance with the conditions and requirements of these organizations received training. During the training process, the applicants were assessed in many areas, such as on how they were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, whether they will be able to continue working in both the short and long-term in their designated fields, whether they will be able to create jobs, and whether they will be able to produce products of significance.

-The Mongolian Lunar New Year is a very important period for the SMEs. What activities does the SMEs Support Center plan to organize during that time?
-The government has called for the Lunar New Year not to be widely celebrated. Although people will celebrate within family members only, they may still do some holiday preparations. Therefore, we are planning to organize traditional as well as virtual trade fairs in order to support the SMEs.
