“Mongoliin eriin gurvan naadam-ikh shuteen” NGO and “Big Blue Flower” travel company implemented the “Horsemen of the World” project. Related to this, D.Tsetsgee, director of the company, and N.Unenburen, head of the “Mongoliin eriin gurvan naadam-ikh shuteen” NGO, gave the following information:
- There is a rumor that when Mongolian horses are sold far away, they run back to their homeland. We wanted to prove it through video. So I chose two horses and followed them by car from a distance to see if they ran to the homeland. We studied the horses starting from 2020, met with herders and heard many stories.
The owner of the horse agreed to give his horse to assist the project. Then we transported the horses from Bayan-Uul soum of Gobi-Altai province to Delger steppe of Gobi-Altai province, Buutsagaan of Bayankhongor province and Uvurkhangai province.
The horses ran 30-40km to the east everyday wherever they were. After that, it became clear that they were going to run back to their homeland, and 2 horses stayed for 5 days in Uvurkhangai province. The project was launched in Uvurkhangai province in May. When the bridle was removed, the two horses ran straight across the Ongi River to the east.
After the first 2-3 days, they didn’t stop as we expected not. The horses went to Bayantsagaan behind Erdenelalai soum, next to Delgertsogt. And they chose places with good nature and went without losing their way. Mongolian horses are wonderful animals and natural creations. Mongolians know that horses run back to their homeland, but foreigners don't believe it. Because other countries don’t have running horses.
Thus, we aimed to make a documentary about this. Many people helped us by giving money and preparing meals. We were live on “Delkhiin Moritnuud” Facebook page and thousands of people watched. We named two horses Golomt and Gal. These horses have successfully completed their journey. During their journey, they came across stallions about 100 times, but they didn’t interfere with these horses. In fact, stallions don’t welcome other horses. We also met a brown horse, and after being together for 30 minutes, the brown horse drove our two horses to the railway crossing and returned. We don't know anything about horse language. There were several exciting events during our journey.
After a 500 km journey, one horse's iron horseshoe broke. When he was running on the three legs, local guys made a horseshoe. After 15 days they returned to the homeland and were very relieved. When they returned to their homeland, they slept for a very long time. The owners also received their horses well.
I am very happy to witness such a wonderful story. We realize that we are forgetting and neglecting many of our heritages. We are grateful to the people who helped us during the journey, and to the Governor of Govisumber province, who came to help us with a veterinarian from 100 km away.
Mongolian horses are able to protect themselves from wild animals. I am worried that Mongolian horses are being half-blood a lot. We had put GPS on the horses. The one traveled 1,200 km and the other one traveled about 900 km. The 20 days of the horses' journey will be a documentary. We have proven experimentally that Mongolian horses are more resilient than other horses.
