ULAANBAATAR WILL FACE WATER SHORTAGE AFTER JUST THREE YEARS
Drinking water is also used for toilet flushing and car washing centers in Ulaanbaatar city and the city does not reuse the waste water due to lack of treatment technology. As a result, city`s water resource is reducing and we have come close to face water shortage.
Even some parts of the Tuul River, main water resource of the city, are stopped running every spring. It shows that groundwater of the river is reducing. The reason is that water resource of the environment has become unable to provide for its growing water demand.
According to the study conducted by Millennium Challenge Corporation revealed that Ulaanbaatar will have no clean water resource by 2020. However, no one is paying attention to the issue and still washing their cars with drinking water.
Today alcohol and beverage industries, as well as leather, wool and cashmere factories, use water consumption of more than 350 thousand and 170 thousand people respectively per year. The point is that they do not reuse these water.
60-YEAR-OLD WATER PIPES ARE IN DANGER OF EXPLODING
60 years ago in 1960, underground water pipes were installed along the roads in Ulaanbaatar. Today the pipes are in danger of exploding.
Each time they need repair causing road closures on main roads. However, residents have already adjusted to this issue.
"Even Ulaanbaatar is called as a metropolitan city, it has no underground system or tunnel which controls these pipes. We do not have the opportunity to repair the pipes without disrupting the roads. Honestly, Ulaanbaatar is facing lack of water resources and water supply network", says Z.Batbayar who has been managing the water sector for many years.
THE CITY WITH UNPLEASANT ODOR
The tourists imagine Mongolia as a country of clean air and wide open spaces. However, they are welcomed with unpleasant odors coming from waste water treatment plant when landing at Ulaanbaatar city.
A half-century old sewage and waste water treatment plant of the city is located in western suburbs. Springtime, summertime, when it gets really warm the odor permeates the area and distress not only the residents living near but also those who are living in the city center.
On Nov 17, 2015, former Prime Minister Ch.Saikhanbileg introduced a project to build new waste water treatment plant. At that time, former City Mayor E.Bat-Uul announced that Turkey to provide USD 300 million and France to provide USD 80 million on the project. However, the project was halted.
How far will we go this way? How do you imagine Ulaanbaatar city after 10 years?
