To carry forward strong ongoing momentum and to further amplify India-Mongolia defence cooperation, Defence Minister of Mongolia General G. Saikhanbayar and Ambassador M P Singh attended the 15th Bilateral Joint Military 'NOMADIC ELEPHANT' Exercise being conducted from July 17-31, 2023 in Mongolia.
At the commencement of the Nomadic Elephant Exercise 2023, Ambassador M P Singh handed over two ‘Made in India’ Ambulances and 200 Special High Altitude Winter clothing to the Mongolian Armed Forces on behalf of Minister of Defence of India and expressed hope that this bilateral training exercise will prove to be yet another significant milestone in continuously evolving defence cooperation between Indian Army and Mongolian Armed Forces and contribute to further fostering bilateral relations between India and Mongolia. Minister in his remarks, commended strides being made in advancing ‘strategic partnership’ through increasing defence collaboration.
About 70 Soldiers of the Mongolian Armed Forces and 43-member contingent from the JAMMU & KASHMIR LIGHT INFANTRY Regiment are participating in this annual exercise, aimed at consolidating positive military relations, exchanging best practices, developing inter-operability, camaraderie and friendship between the two armies during this platoon level Field Training Exercise (FTX). During the exercise, Indian and Mongolian troops will engage in various training activities designed to enhance their skills and capabilities including endurance training, reflex firing, small team tactics, rock craft training and enhance each other’s operational experience. The exercise will also focus on counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain.
The 'NOMADIC ELEPHANT is an annual training and experience sharing exercise which is conducted alternatively in Mongolia and India. The last edition was held at the Special Forces Training School, Bakloh in October 2019.
In the recent months, defence cooperation between India and Mongolia has registered noticeable expansion that was reflected in the first ever visit of Defence Minister of India to Mongolia in Sept 2022, during which he inaugurated the Cyber Security Training Centre (CSTC) in National Defence University. Visit of Mongolian Defence Minister, General Saikhanbayar to India for DefExpo 2022, Visit of Indian National Defence College Team, holding of the 11th Joint Working Group Meeting between the Ministries of Defence and participation of 40-member contingent of Indian Army in the multilateral Peace Keeping Khan Quest 2023 exercise demonstrate shared commitment our two nations to the regional security and defence cooperation.
