Rescuers retrieve sunken vehicle from six metres under Buir Lake ice

A Toyota Prius-30 carrying six people was recovered from a depth of six metres after it plunged through an ice crack on February 24, 2026, local emergency services said.

The National Emergency Management Agency received an emergency call at 13:18 reporting that two people had survived and four occupants were missing. The Dornod Emergency Management Agency’s search-and-rescue unit dug an access hole roughly 300 metres from the shore, carried out drone reconnaissance to pinpoint the vehicle, and pulled the car from six metres of water. Rescue teams recovered the bodies of the victims and handed them to police, officials said.

Since the start of the year local teams have responded to 12 ice-related rescue calls, saving four people and towing five vehicles, authorities added.

The Meteorological Institute warned that unseasonably warm conditions have thinned ice in places and urged the public not to drive or travel on frozen lakes and rivers. Emergency services repeated their appeal that people avoid shortcuts over ice and follow official safety advisories.
