J.Chinburen: No vaccine against bubonic plague currently available, imports under consideration

Minister of Health J.Chinburen briefed reporters on decisions made at the latest Cabinet meeting regarding the bubonic plague situation.

He confirmed that, aside from one case detected in Tsagaan-Uul soum of Khuvsgul province, no additional infections have been registered. In Mongolia, bubonic plague vaccines were previously administered only to high-risk groups such as hunters, herders, and related personnel. However, in recent years, the vaccine has not been imported, as it is produced only in Russia and Ukraine and must meet Mongolia’s stringent safety requirements.

The Minister emphasized that special attention will now be given to building a reserve supply of plague vaccines for emergency use.

He also noted that while one case has been confirmed, there have been no instances of the disease progressing to the pulmonary form. The infection has not spread to Ulaanbaatar or other provinces, and all 110 individuals who had contact with the patient remain symptom-free.
