Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, the President of Mongolia, and Ban Ki-moon, the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations, planted a memorial tree together in the Peacekeepers’ Grove at the National Park, as part of Mongolia’s “Billion Trees” national movement.
The tree-planting ceremony commemorates the contribution of Mongolian peacekeepers to international peacekeeping missions. President U.Khurelsukh highlighted that the Peacekeepers’ Grove was established in honor of the more than 20,000 Mongolian troops who have served in UN peacekeeping operations.
In 2024, Ban Ki-moon was awarded Mongolia’s highest state decoration, the Order of Chinggis Khaan, in recognition of his global leadership and support for multilateralism.
Ban Ki-moon expressed his appreciation for the grove’s dedication to peacekeepers and recalled his past interactions with Mongolian troops during his tenure as UN Secretary-General.
This tradition of honoring peace through tree planting was also followed by current UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who planted a tree during his 2022 visit to Mongolia.
