The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry paid an official visit to Mongolia on June 5 at the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Mr L.Purevsuren. In frames of the visit, the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will hold official talks with Minister for Foreign Affairs L.Purevsuren, and he will pay a courtesy call on President of Mongolia Mr. Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj. Furthermore, he will be meeting with young leaders of Mongolia.
Secretary Kerry landed at Chinggis Khaan International airport at 0700 AM and was welcomed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs D.Gankhuyag and U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia H.E. Jennifer Zimdahl Galt.
In frames of his visit The visit started with official talks between the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Mr L.Purevsuren and the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. At the start of the talks the two sides noted the active development of bilateral relations based on the comprehensive partnership relationship and regular frequency of high level visits. The parties exchanged views regarding the bilateral political, defense, economic, and regional and international partnership.
Minister L.Purevsuren noted the U.S. as Mongolia’s important third neighbor and expressed gratitude for supporting Mongolia’s democratic transition since the beginning. While mentioning that bilateral political and defense relations have been actively developing, he emphasized that the trade and economic relations have been stagnating. Noting the partnership opportunities in the agricultural and renewable energy sectors, they exchanged views on intensifying the economic partnership.
The Minister highlighted that the Millennium Challenge Corporations first compact was important in building people-to-people ties and the decision to implement a second compact in Mongolia would have positive and important effects on Mongolia’s development and the livelihood of Mongolia’s citizens. He also proposed to the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to work towards facilitating the ease of travel for our citizens.

The President Elbegdorj welcomed the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and expressed hope that his visit will promote the further improvement of bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.
The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry expressed pleasure over his visit to Mongolia and emphasized Mongolia’s efforts and achievements in democratic development. On behalf of the President Barack Obama and the people of the United States, he appreciated the people of Mongolia for their contribution to the world’s peacekeeping missions, for being global citizens and for sharing their lessons learned in democratic transition with the other countries.
President Elbegdorj appreciated the USA for its support and assistance to Mongolia’s democratic transition since the very start. He expressed Mongolia’s willingness to continue deepening and strengthening the bilateral relationship with the United States - important third neighbor. The President noted that in 2017, marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and the United States and in the scope of the anniversary the both countries will hold a number of events of mutual cooperation. President Elbegdorj wished the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry a successful visit and wished success in his future endeavors.
Present at the meeting were L.Purevsuren, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia; B.Altangerel, the Ambassador of Mongolia to the USA; Jennifer Zimdahl Galt, the Ambassador of the United States to Mongolia; A.Battor, an advisor to the President on foreign policy; and other officials.
Afternoon Secretary Kerry had a meeting with English speaking Mongolia young leaders at Shangri-La hotel. During the meeting U.S. Secretary of State Kerry talked about challenges of democracy, neutrality and human rights.

Secretary Kerry concluded his official visit by experiencing traditional Mongolian naadam in Tuv aimag. Mongolia and the United States of America established democratic relations in January 27, 1987. Since that, the US Secretary of State James Baker visited twice Mongolia in 1990 and 1991, Madeleine Albright in 1998 and Hillary Clinton in 2012.
