The “Blue pearl” ice festival has taken place in Khuvsgul province every year since 2001 aiming to develop winter tourism and advertise Mongolia to foreigners. This year, the festival will be held on March 1-5.
In 2000, D.Lkhagvatsogt and J.Tumursukh, former environmental inspectors of the Khuvsgul Special Protected Area, organized an ice festival at the place named after Santin Uvur to protect Khuvsgul, also known as the Mother Ocean, and to promote winter tourism. Locals took part in the horse sled race.
In 2014, the lake ice was so thin that the festival was not held, and in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus epidemic.
