The media has a huge impact on gender equality. One of this important roles is that the media is a reflection of society and that the voices of various representatives are equally conveyed to readers, audience, and viewers.
GoGo.mn became first news website in Mongolia partner with the BBC's "50:50 The Equality Project".
WHAT IS "50:50 EQUALITY PROJECT"
50:50 The Equality Project is committed to inspiring and supporting the BBC and organisations around the globe to consistently create journalism and media content that fairly represents our world since 2017.
The initiative, born in the BBC’s London newsroom, uses a methodology that is rooted in data, creativity, practicality and passion to fundamentally shift representation within the media.
It was originally a simple idea to measure and increase the representation of women in one of the BBC's news programmes. Since then, the initiative has been rolled out across 750 BBC departments, not just across news products, but by content teams across all platforms.
HOW IT WORKS
50:50 is a voluntary, self-monitoring system designed to fit into existing workflows. It is simple and flexible, with a methodology founded on three core following principles.
- Collect data to effect change
- Measure what you control
- Never compromise on quility
Miranda Holtt, BBC 50:50's senior external partner specialist, said of the project: "Collecting data is key to making a difference in our sources. Collecting data daily, weekly and monthly shows how many female sources in articles, TV and radio programmes. We can control what comes in. Also, we only record and count what we can control. What we mean by what we can control is whether we decide who to talk to or quote in our articles and programs, including predominantly female sources and seeking out new voices"
In addition, she said, "There are many women who are emerging as leaders at the level of political and business decision-making. Our job is to find and bring them out. This is not a very far-fetched, big goal. It just takes a little determination. Because the reason is obvious. Half of our population is women. I mean, we just wanted to be a reflection of that society. Especially since the BBC is a British public broadcaster, we charge a license fee from our users. So we have to represent the people and society that pay those fees. We "This is the fifth year the project has been implemented. Children's programs, political programs, documentary programs, and artistic programs have all adopted this experience."
GOGO.MN IS MONGOLIA'S FIRST WEBSITE PARTNERED WITH THE 50:50 PROJECT
The BBC's 50:50 project team is generously sharing this method of ensuring equality in content with international media and other organizations. Today, 145 organizations in 30 countries are using this methodology in partnership with the BBC.
Out of this, GoGo.mn became the first news site in Mongolia to officially partner with the project.
The editor-in-chief of GoGo.mn R. Adyasuren said about this partnership, “Our company focuses on continuous improvement and training. We are working on a policy to empower the editorial office not only in the field but also in other areas. In this context, the editorial office participated in the ""Let's report sensitively" program initiated by the Media Council and became one of the two editors selected for the mentorship program for editorial empowerment.
Paying attention to ensuring human rights and gender equality, and performing the role of guiding and leading the society is an integral part of our editorial policy.
That's why we strive to ensure gender balance in our news and articles, as well as in our visual narratives. It all started with the inclusion of male and female sources as much as possible in order to ensure gender balance in our core content, such as GoGo brand interviews, profile interviews, reports and feature articles.
By participating in the Mentorship Program, we have started the "BALANCE" initiative to further improve this beginning and make it a benchmark. The experience of the world's largest newsroom, the BBC, is essential to the effectiveness and value of our initiatives. We believe that can make our initiative more effective by applying the methods and tools that have been developed over many years to our experience.
