On September 1, 2026, President of Mongolia U.Khurelsukh met with President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in Bishkek, the capital of the Kyrgyz Republic. The two heads of state emphasized the importance of further deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Mongolia and Russia, enriching it with new areas of cooperation, expanding trade and economic ties, and implementing large-scale mutually beneficial projects and programs.
President U.Khurelsukh noted that actively developing good-neighborly relations across all areas is one of Mongolia’s foreign policy priorities. He also expressed satisfaction with the regular high-level reciprocal visits and meetings between the two countries and the continued development of bilateral cooperation.
This year marks the 105th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Russia. The leaders emphasized that implementing the joint plan comprising more than 30 measures to mark this anniversary is important for strengthening the bilateral partnership and expanding cooperation.
They noted that the implementation of the Interim Free Trade Agreement between Mongolia and the Eurasian Economic Union has created real opportunities to bring trade and economic cooperation to a new level and increase trade turnover.
The two sides identified energy, road transport, industry, mining, and agriculture as priority areas of cooperation. The presidents exchanged views on intensifying the joint work of scientists and researchers on the Eg River Hydropower Plant project, advancing the project, and expanding and modernizing Thermal Power Plant No. 3 (TPP-3) in Ulaanbaatar.

They also discussed plans for Ulaanbaatar Railway (UBTZ) to modernize its technical and technological capabilities and increase its freight transportation capacity from the current 30 million tons to 50 million tons over the next five years. The two sides agreed to study the possibility of establishing western and eastern railway corridors connecting Mongolia, Russia, and China.
The Western Corridor, or Vertical Axis Railway, is expected to support the economic development of Mongolia’s western provinces and expand trade flows among the three countries. The Eastern Corridor would provide shorter routes to ports in Russia and northeastern China, facilitate the export of mineral products, and contribute to the development of a regional economic network.
The leaders also discussed the construction of small and medium-sized nuclear power plants in cooperation with Rosatom and agreed to intensify cooperation on a project to transport natural gas from Russia to China through Mongolian territory.

More than 400 representatives from Russia are expected to participate in a bilateral regional conference to be held in Ulaanbaatar on September 14–15, where they will discuss joint projects and programs.
