There are several national parks around Ulaanbaatar, where you can spend the weekend and enjoy fresh air in the winter. One of them is Hustai National Park - one of the most popular and prestigious special protected areas in Mongolia.
Hustai is home to the Takhi (also known as Przewalski horse in the western world) – the world’s only remaining wild horse species. After going totally extinct in the 1960s, the Takhi wild horses were successfully reintroduced to their native land Mongolia in the 1990s, and today there are over 200 Takhi horses inhabit the mountains & steppes of Hustai National Park. There are many other wildlife species besides the Takhi in Hustai including the rare Red deer, Gray wolf, Steppe fox to name a few. You can view the Takhi in wilderness from so close! Moreover, Hustai National Park is a great place for hiking, horse riding or cycling.
The national park management offers a good Information Centre, which displays photos, scripts, and illustrations on the Takhi reintroduction, as well as the ecosystems and historical places of Hustai National Park. Our guides & rangers will give you a good introduction to Hustai.
Friendly Hustai tourist camp offers comfortable Ger accommodation & good food for visitors (daily rate for 1 person starts at 85000 MNT including 3 meals a day), so you can actually stay overnight after hiking in the wilderness for a while. Besides hiking and Takhi spotting there are a number of ways you can make your Hustai stay more fun such as playing snooker billiard, traditional Mongolian games or table tennis.
At an easy 2hr drive (on paved road!) from Ulaanbaatar to the west, Hustai National Park is definitely a place to escape to.
