The Beauty that arose from the ashes

Tango is a passionate and vibrant dance of a duo that expresses the connection between the partners. The dance plays on the gradual and swift movements, which feel as if they are igniting into a sparkling flame. The harmonization of intimate and close interactions with the upbeat music certainly makes Tango shine brighter than any other dance styles. Tango originated in Buenos Aires, and now covers streets to high-class ballrooms. However, the story about how Tango came to be the dance of affection of today is rather fascinating.

Many do not consider Tango as just dance. Instead, it represents the hardships and falling-outs of both men and women and the combination of the music, dance and the emotions that are ingrained. Tango has evolved throughout history, in which it consisted of different genres from diverse cultures and areas.

The origins of Tango first began with the great emigration of Europeans and Africans to Argentina, especially the area of Buenos Aires. Most of the emigrants were Spanish and Italian men who sought to find fortune in the land of Argentina. Along with the emigrants, came their music, musical instruments, and dance styles. Musical instruments such as violin and bandoneon, Dance styles such as Mazurka and many different musical devices, dance styles started to find their popularity.

Due to large emigration of men, the women were outnumbered in Buenos Aires, causing many men to seek enjoyment in places such as clubs, bars, brothels and the street. At the same time, the Gauchos or the Argentine Cowboys also arrived in the capital Buenos Aires. When these men of different origins and culture clashed, they performed Milonga. Milonga is a form of music similar to rap battles with a verse and an answer. The word Milonga can be interpreted as argument or battle. Tango truly sparked here due to people from Europe, Africa, and Argentina battling out with their music and dance styles, which resulted in combination of the best aspects of those styles.

Later on, the first form of tango originated from men at brothels attempting to impress the women. They got only three tries at performing their tango moves; and if the performance was outstanding, the men did not leave empty-handed. The initial form of tango was often looked down upon by those of higher class up until the children of the wealthy started seek adventure in the areas of the not so wealthy. There they would find tango to be entertaining; and by practicing the dance, Tango became widely accepted even by the wealthy. With the help of the people of the higher class, Tango started to place a foot on the European stage as people traveled around. Suddenly, the street Tango became a worldwide phenomenon.

Tango has evolved throughout history; the magnificent dance is performed in all parts of the world. However, the roots of Tango is still implanted in Buenos Aires. The essence of Tango - emotions of frustrated love, the hardships of the people and the passion that the dance brings can be truly appreciated by visiting Buenos Aires. There are places all over Buenos Aires where you can taste the excitement of Tango and we recommend you to visit Milonga Parakultural at Salon Canning for the best show experience or La Milonga del Indio for a great street show on Sundays.
