L.Oyun-Erdene, Prime Minister of Mongolia, Kh.Nyambaatar, Governor of the Capital city, and other relevant officials held a meeting with environmental scientists, researchers, government and non-government organizations. In this remwork, the problems faced in the environment and ecology sector were discussed and opinions were exchanged on solutions.
During the meeting, Mayor Kh.Nyambaatar presented the planned and implemented measures to reduce air pollution in Ulaanbaatar.
The parliament has approved the law on reducing traffic congestion in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar and providing housing to ger district. The final solution to air, environment and soil pollution, garbage and other problems of Ulaanbaatar city is to provide housing to ger districts. In the framework, six sub-centers will be established in the capital, land acquisition will be carried out, and the construction of apartments for 18,000 households will be started next year in Selbe and Bayankhoshuu sub-centers. Also, the number of 720,000 cars registered in the capital will not be increased. Also, in the short term, a bid for 20,000 electric heaters is going to be announced in order to improve air quality and reduce the number of chimneys in the region. Even 100,000 households can be switched to electric heaters if the power capacity is increased in the future.
Representatives at the meeting made following proposals to reduce air and environmental pollution and protect the environment:
- Provide concessionary loans to organizations and enterprises operating in this sector and provide them with foreign loans.
- Support the use of electric cars
- Stop using pit toilets
- Exemption of waste processing plants from import and customs duties
- Educating citizens about waste, including it in laws and regulations, and increasing citizen participation
- Have database including research results of water, soil and air pollution
