Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with national stakeholders, convened a technical dialogue today to commemorate World Food Safety Day 2025, under the theme “Food Safety: Science in Action.” The event brought together representatives from government institutions, academic and research bodies, laboratories, the private sector, and international partners to assess progress and strengthen collaboration in advancing food safety in Mongolia.
Ms. Diao Qingyun, the newly appointed FAO Representative to Mongolia highlighted the importance of science-based food safety systems in ensuring public health, economic resilience, and sustainable development in her opening remarks.
“Food safety is a shared responsibility that requires coordination across the entire food chain,” said Ms. Diao. “In Mongolia, where climatic conditions and structural vulnerabilities pose distinct challenges, the application of science, innovation, and intersectoral partnerships is critical to ensuring safe and nutritious food for all.”
The event featured technical presentations on the progress and outcomes of FAO-supported initiatives, including the One Health, Action to Support Implementation of Codex Trust Fund Initiatives (ACT), and Food Safety Risk Assessment projects. Discussions underscored the importance of coordinated action across agriculture, health, and environmental sectors to address risks such as antimicrobial resistance, food contamination, and climate-induced disruptions to food systems.
Participants discussed the value of Mongolia’s engagement in the Codex Alimentarius process and recognized the role of science in informing national policies, enhancing laboratory capacity, and supporting risk-based approaches to food safety regulation.
World Food Safety Day, observed globally on 7 June, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to promote awareness and inspire action to prevent, detect, and manage foodborne risks. The 2025 theme, “Food Safety: Science in Action,” calls for resilient, responsive, and evidence-informed food safety systems that protect health, support livelihoods, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
