Major construction of the International Airport in the Khushig Valley started in May, 2013 and was completed in December 2016. What remains is the works to correct infringements and deficiencies that were found by the state commission in January of last year.
Minister of Road and Transportation Bat-Erdene Jadamba informed that JPY 48 billion were spent on the major construction, which comprises of 32 facilities, and JPY 1.5 billion for the special purpose airfield equipment costs. The financing was settled with a Japanese International Cooperation Bank’s soft loan, which has a maturity of 40-year.
It was agreed that 51 percent of the airport management will be under the ownership of Japan and 49 percent - under Mongolia, and the sides are currently in talks to establish a joint venture company. the According to the Ministry of Road and Transportation, 74.7 percent of construction of aerodrome service, luggage and mail transportation services facilities, and 95.6 percent of administration building construction, which have been built with Mongolian investment, have been completed at present. There is an estimate that approximately 900-1000 people will work at the new airport and the whole staff of the Chinggis Khaan Airport will be transferred there.
