The Hu's tour continues around the United States. Yesterday they played in Houston, Texas and today they will play in Dallas. The number of international fans are increasing as the The Hu is very successful around the world. Their online fan group is full of photos, videos, comments about them. There, Allison B. Wallace who is a big fan of The Hu wrote, "I've decided to save up for a year and go to Mongolia to get tattooed at Bandaga sho where The Hu's goes". We talked with Allison B. Wallace on online and had an interesting interview about her plan to travel in Mongolia, tattoos and the band.
"IT'S LIKE LISTENING TO MAGIC AND SOMETHING THAT'S SPIRITUAL AND FULL OF HEART AND SOUL"
- Where do you live?
- I live in Pennsylvania, USA.
- We saw your Facebook post which is about you have decided will come to Mongolia after save up for a year and will get tattoo by Bandga who is The Hu's members tattooed by. When do you plan to come to Mongolia?
- Hopefully next June. Sometime after the pandemic has blown over and the world is a little bit more back to normal. I already have tattoos and I can get somebody here to do something, but how much more fun when it be to travel and to see the same guys who can make beautiful tattoos too. It's just crazy idea but can't stop thinking about adventure. So, I definitely want to go. Sort of a tattoo pilgrimage and perfect vacation.
- How long have you been a fan of The HU band?
- Only since February 2020, which I know doesn't sound like a whole lot of time. But I when music grabs you there's no going back sometimes. It's like I couldn't stop listening to them. I found them kind of randomly as I found them amoung that Star Wars video game they did a song for “Jedi: Fallen Order” it's called. Good game too.
I missed their concert in 2019 because I didn't know who they were yet which is sad. So, I feel honored to have seen them on their second North American tour. I've seen a lot of concerts but I haven't been this excited for show like since I was a teenager or little kid, since maybe the 90s’. So, I wanted to be up front. It was a joy to also meet other fans which belong to a fan group of Hu. They are just as special as the band themselves, everyone I met at the Philadelphia are just the best people. The best personality, I guess you could say like we feel like a tribe, definitely a special group. It's a good place to be in. I think the band puts everybody in a good place because that’s what happens when you're spreading love and joy.
I really love their fusion of genre, anytime you add strings to rock music, you're going get something better than what you had before
- Glad you can make friends who love do in a same way.
- Yeah, I already met so many amazing people due to the international fan group on Facebook. I can't remember being this excited about a band and having so many people to share my excitement. Great music has a way of bringing people together, even if they’re half the globe away. I hope to meet more fan club members when I visit Mongolia.
Please share your first impressions when you after to listened to The HU band?
The vocals and throat singing were probably what I really gravitated towards. I mean some vocals, when you hear them, it's just okay, but with throat singing it's almost like it crawls into your soul and want to live there and it doesn't want to go away. I really love their fusion of genre, anytime you add strings to rock music, you're going get something better than what you had before. The Morin Khuurs, Tovshuur, and flutes, add so much depth to their style. It’s something I had never heard before, but familiar with the western rock ‘n roll vibe but also very unique. It's like listening to magic and something that's spiritual and full of heart and soul.
The Hu’s music is the kind where you'll go to sleep with one song in your head and wake up with a different one in the morning.
I live for music. I like music concerts. My reason to move to Philadelphia is that everybody plays in here. I could to see bands from Mongolia, Ukraine, UK or anywhere. Everyone who wants to make it ends up playing in Philadelphia. A lot of famous albums were recorded here. It’s a good city for any genre of music, no matter what you’re a fan of.
- Do you play any music instruments?
- I don't actually play any instruments. I'm a seamstress. So my creative outlet is with fabric and making things. I'm more of a crafter. I really never had the talent to play music but I love it. My dad is a musician, so I have an idea of how much talent it takes to learn, but I just never really had the aptitude or the patience to learn.
- What is your favorite song of The HU?
- It's not easy to pick one. The Hu’s music is the kind where you'll go to sleep with one song in your head and wake up with a different one in the morning. I keep coming back to ‘Legend of Mother Swan’ and ‘Wolf Totem’. ‘This is the Mongol’ is one of the newer songs that I like very much. We all think it's going to be on their second album. It is really good and I love watching the video for that one a lot. It's a cool sound and you can tell the guys had a good time recording it for the video. ‘Legend of Mother Swan’ is cool because it’s sort of a dark song lyrically, but the music is very upbeat.
- Have you ever talked with them?
- I met them at the Philadelphia show but it's not like sitting down over a beer and having a conversation. I got to say ‘thank you’, just trying to share my appreciation. I hope they know how much I love their music. It was a really quick meet and greet and of course due to COVID there's no touching or hugging. We want to keep them safe obviously, so they have a successful tour.
"I’M TRYING TO LEARN AS MUCH AS I CAN, READING SOME MONGOLIAN HISTORY NOW"
- How much did you know about Mongolia before you knew The HU?
- Well, most of what I know is about Gobi and dinosaurs. All the best dinosaurs were found in Mongolia, like Velociraptor. I’m learning more things everyday. History in American schools don’t go into any detail about Mongolia so it’s was kind of a blind spot for me. I wish we would have studied Chinggis Khan in school. I’m trying to learn as much as I can, reading some history now. The Hu invite everyone to learn about Mongolian culture and they’ve made the effort to come all the way over here to America and share, so I’d like to take them up on the offer and learn as much as I can. ‘Challenge accepted’. I'm definitely excited to learn.
- What are you planning to do aside from getting tattoo after come to Mongolia?
- The Hu talk a lot about the music scene in Ulaanbaatar, so I want to see some other Mongolian bands. I don't know if it's possible but I'd love to visit the conservatory were they all studied and went to school if students and teachers perform shows I’d love to catch one. And I want to see the steppes. Those gorgeous landscapes that all look like postcards. Take a horse tour, and if I have time, maybe go out to the Gobi. I’ll definitely visit some paleontology museums and art gallerys. I will probably stick mostly to the Ulaanbaatar, I’m a city girl. I plan to visit for two weeks, it won’t be hard to find things to do. I will be bopping around as a music tourist and shopping. I want to go to the Hunnu Fashion store and simular shops. I’d like to get some gifts for my friends.
What kind of tattoo are you planning to have by Mongolian tattoo artist Bandga?
I will let him do whatever he wants as long as there's no nudity. You get the best tattoos when you give the artist freedom to create. I’ve not got much space left, so I’ll get a lower leg tattoo. We call that a ‘sock’ in America. I just want something beautiful, inspired by the Hu and Mongolia. Perhaps a Snow Leopard, they’ve always been my favorite animal.
- How many tattoos do you have currently?
- I’ve got 2 full sleeves which have probably 15 hours of work in each. It’s hard to count because you don't get them all done in one setting. My tattoos are kind of historical, I have a Robin Hood tattoo, a David Bowie tattoo, and have a Boba Fett tattoo from Star Wars. I'm a big fan of Star Wars, I probably would not have found The Hu without Star Wars, or at least not as quickly as I did. So I’m grateful that one passion can introduce me to another.
- Do you have any items or clothes which is related to The HU? I saw you have mask with Mongolian flag printed on.
- Yeah, I got that idea while watching the Olympics. Hu’s concert tickets were being sold around the same time that the Olympic games were playing on TV and there were lot of the athletes that had mask with their country flags on them. So, I thought how fun would it be to go to The Hu show with Mongolian flag mask on. So, I looked for it on eBay. I also have The Hu masks which everybody wore. I wanted to be extra.
I want to them stay healthy and keep making music as long as they can and be happy doing it
I also have The Hu T-shirts and hoodie. Pretty much one for each day of the week. I have a keychain, and pendant which were sent me as a gift in a beautiful balsa wood box. It’s pretty special and came from the Hunnu Fashion store. I could buy everything that store sells, I’m excited to have an opportunity to visit.
- What will you wish to the band through this interview?
- I want them to have a wonderfully successful tour here in America. I want them have safe travels and to bring their music to more and more people. I know their second album will be a smashing success. I hope to be as excited for their tenth album as I am for the second one, that will be out early next year. Mostly I just want the Hu to enjoy what they're doing and keep doing making music that feels like magic. That's probably the biggest wish, that I want them to have a real good international success. I want to them stay healthy and keep making music as long as they can and be happy doing it.
- Thank you for the interview.
