Bayankhongor province is situated in the South-Western part of Mongolia, and occupies the high plateau of the South Khangai mountains covering the hills of the Gobi Altai Mountains.
The highest point of the province is Ikh Bogd Mountain, which is 3957 meter high, and the lowest point is 750 meter high in the Altai Gobi. There are the Great Altai Gobi, such as the Zeeren Valley and the Nomin Gobi. In 1957, a strong earthquake occurred in the Gobi-Altai Mountains, and an enormous crack of 300 km behind Ikhbogd and Bayantsagaan originated.
Bayankhongor province is rich in coal, gold and construction materials. It has large rivers such as Baidrag and Tui, and large lakes such as Buuntsagaan, Orog Lake and Khukh Lake. There are also Shargaljuut hot springs with temperatures up to 95 degrees celsius, Oukheg springs, Khuremt springs, Khaliut springs and Urguut springs.
In the northern part of the province, there are many kinds of plants, including herbs and fodder plants. Furthermore, there are wild animals such as marmot, wolf, fox, leopard, and a few gobi bears.
The population of Bayankhongor province is 87,993 and the province is divided into 20 soums.
