On April 10, Parliament’s Petitions Standing Committee reviewed information provided by entities with licenses to operate tourism businesses along the Tuul River. The Petitions Standing Committee has organized several discussions about Tuul River developments, and the Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism has revoked the licenses of 28 entities carrying out construction projects along the Tuul River.
Since 2016, a total of 5,846 petitions and grievances regarding Tuul River pollution as a result of construction, mining, and other industrial projects have been submitted to the Petitions Standing Committee. Ulaanbaatar Deputy Mayor J. Batbayasgalan stated, “Construction and the production of minerals have negatively impacted the Tuul River’s ecosystem.” Member of Parliament and the Chair of the standing committee M. Oyunchimeg reported that a task force was set up to do fieldwork and report on the grievances. She noted that special guidelines on how to proceed with Tuul River projects were submitted to Cabinet in 2016 and 2017. The MP stated that the next discussion of Tuul River projects will be held in the first week of June.
