Mongolian Union of Journalists in Support of Sustainable Development, and Economic Journalists Club, have challenged the government and citizens to refuse over celebrating and greeting each other /Zolgolt/.
#CHALLENGE:
Coronavirus is spreading to many countries and Mongolia is going to prepare celebration of Tsagaan Sar Holiday. Mongolia is in high risk due to bordering with People’s Republic of China where the virus has started. However the government is taking relevant actions such as closing schools and kindergartens until March 2, and banning public events, WHO warned that risk is very high.
Experts said that human-to-human Coronavirus spreading is faster than SARS which also happened in 2003, although death risk is 3 times lower. As of January 29, 132 death cases because of Coronavirus have been registered and most cases were old people with chronic disease.
Therefore, Mongolian Union of Journalists in Support of Sustainable Development, and Economic Journalists Club have challenged the government and citizens to refuse over celebrating and greeting each other during this period, and recommended followings:
- Refuse participating to public greeting ceremony, only greet elders and parents if necessary,
- Import and product price increase during the holiday. Import amount was USD 350 million in February, 2019 and its USD 130 million is relevant purchases with Tsagaan Sar. Thus, support domestic products and limit foreign currency are advised.
- Make wise choice on consumer goods considering that price growth influences on local economy and livelihood,
- The government is advised to make limitation decision related celebration of Tsagaan Sar and inform to citizens immediately.
