The Times published article that distorted and misrepresented political situation in Mongolia

The Times website published an article about the political situation in Mongolia. The article was deemed groundless, distorted, and misleading. On June 16, 2025, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs B.Battsetseg expressed her position on the matter.

She wrote on her official page:

“In recent days, some foreign media outlets have published false information about Mongolia’s social and political situation. As a member of the Parliament, a member of the Government responsible for foreign affairs, and a citizen of Mongolia, I find it necessary to express my concern and position.

The article, published on The Times website on June 11, 2025, was said to have distorted the domestic political situation and events in Mongolia, containing baseless claims that appear to be deliberately organized to create fear. The piece was intended to discredit Mongolian democracy and mislead foreign audiences.

Mongolian public possesses the education, awareness, and media literacy to identify and assess the credibility of information found in foreign media, and to distinguish truth from distortion.

The article frequently cites “government sources,” yet presents a one-sided and biased account that ignores facts and alternate perspectives. The so-called “reporters” quoted in the article are, in fact, individuals who have lost political power and are now seeking to conceal their past wrongdoings at any cost. Such actions, damaging Mongolia’s reputation on the international stage in pursuit of personal interest amount to betrayal.

The political developments taking place in recent days, stem from the public’s demand for justice. In a democratic society, citizens have made their voices heard, demonstrating the strength and transparency of democratic values, something acknowledged by international journalists and observers.

The Mongolian Parliament, acting as the highest representative authority of the people, has made lawful decisions independently, guided by democratic principles and the rule of law. In this context, a new Prime Minister was appointed in accordance with relevant legal frameworks. Furthermore, the President of Mongolia, attending the parliamentary session, decisively refuted any suspicions of parliamentary weakness, regime change, or the emergence of authoritarian rule.

The misleading article in question was published solely by The Times, while other reputable international media outlets have reported objectively and based on factual information”

She added that the Mongolian public possesses the education, awareness, and media literacy to identify and assess the credibility of information found in foreign media, and to distinguish truth from distortion.

“Our people recognize that the information in this article is untrue, and they have responded by expressing their views and condemning it. They have also voiced their disapproval of how the article insults the knowledge, culture, and democratic values of Mongolian citizens. The public now awaits clarification on who was behind this fabricated piece and their motives.”

Since adopting democracy in 1990, Mongolia has built a rule-of-law state that respects civil liberties, multi-party governance, and press freedom. While debates have arisen over development policy, investment, and economic and financial issues, the nation’s political parties and citizens have maintained unity in foreign policy, an area vital to the country’s independence and security.

Over thirty years ago, Mongolia laid the foundation for an independent, multi-pillar, and peace-oriented foreign policy, which has enabled the nation to avoid external interference and ensure its sovereignty.

However, B.Battsetseg reiterated that attempts to involve external factors in domestic political affairs, especially through misinformation, can severely damage Mongolia’s friendly relations with neighboring countries, undermine its growing international reputation, and ultimately pose a threat to national independence, stability, and security.
