Cabinet has issued a decree to increase the capacity of Thermal Power Plant III (TPP3) by 250 MW and expanding its pipe network, as well as replacing the turbine generator at Thermal Power Plant IV (TPP4) with financing from a soft loan from Russia.
The proposed enhancements to TPP3 would nearly double its energy and heat production capacity. It is also believed that the upgrades would result in a major reduction in harmful emissions from the plant.
Replacing TPP4's turbine generator is expected to help the city's grid meet rapidly increasing demands for energy in Ulaanbaatar. Energy Minister Ts. Davaasuren noted that upgrades to the plants will allow 19,000 ger district households to use 4 KW electric heaters and allow another 60,000 households to consider electric heaters as an alternative to coal heating.
