Mongolia started relocating beavers in 2012 in order to restore the ecological conditions of the Tuul River Basin. As of today, 57 beavers were relocated in Tuul River and its tributaries which are Zaan and Terelj rivers.
Currently, there are 44 beavers at the Beaver Breeding Center under the Capital City Department of Nature and Environment, and eight female beavers are pregnant and two have quadruplets. On May 10, the quintuplets were born and it is the first time in Mongolia.
T.Ganzorig, a beaver herder, said that this is a very rare case and is the result of favorable food, nutrition and good living conditions.
Newborns weigh an average of 540-670 grams, while the quintuplets weigh 540-570 grams. The beaver maintains the natural balance of its habitat by increasing the water level of the river and is especially important for increasing biodiversity. When 100-150 beaver families inhabit, they grow and reproduce naturally.
