B.Delgersaikhan, the Minister of Roads and Transport, held a meeting with Japanese Ambassador to Mongolia Masaru Igawahara, JICA Mongolia Office Head K.Miyagi, and K.Takahashi, a representative of Oriental Consultants Global, to discuss the expansion of Chinggis Khaan International Airport through Japanese soft loan assistance.
Minister B.Delgersaikhan expressed his gratitude for the ongoing cooperation and emphasized the urgent need to increase the airport’s capacity. He noted that air passenger traffic has grown rapidly and the airport is currently operating at high capacity, requiring prompt action to expand infrastructure and enhance efficiency.
JICA's K.Miyagi and Oriental Consultants Global’s K.Takahashi presented the preliminary design and partial expansion plan for the airport’s east and west wings, outlining potential options such as constructing a new passenger terminal, expanding the existing terminal, and extending the runway.
The Minister stressed the importance of aligning the technical and economic feasibility study with Mongolia’s long-term development goals, including urban growth, population projections, customs operations, and Ulaanbaatar’s traffic congestion. He requested that planning be forward-looking, covering the period through 2050, and reflect the anticipated rise in tourism and international passenger flows.
Both sides agreed to integrate their proposals, initiate construction early, and aim for ahead-of-schedule completion. The feasibility study will incorporate input from Mongolian transport and aviation experts, address infrastructure challenges, and be submitted for Cabinet-level discussion. The parties also pledged to maintain close coordination throughout the process.
