On March 27, 2025, the Mongolian Parliament ratified the agreement between the Government of Mongolia and the Government of the People's Republic of China on the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Port Cross-Border Railway. The agreement also includes provisions for coal trade and expanding the capacity of the Tavan Tolgoi coal mine.
The commissioning of the border railway is expected to significantly boost Mongolia’s coal export capacity, doubling port throughput and increasing coal exports to an average of 165 million tons per year. This expansion is projected to generate an additional USD 1.5 billion in annual coal sales revenue.
As part of the broader railway infrastructure strategy, Mongolia plans to connect other key border ports, including Shiveekhuren-Sekhee, Bichigt-Zuunkhatavch, and Khangi-Mandal, through a phased railway expansion. Future projects will also focus on developing the western and eastern railway corridors to enhance Mongolia's trade and logistics network.
