The Fourteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP14) is being organized by the Government of Uzbekistan, in Samarkand from 12-17 February, 2024. During the Conference, “Research and protection of Asiatic wild asses in the world” session was held.
Researchers from Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and the United States participated in the session organized by the Equid Specialist Group of IUCN.
Dr. B.Buuveibaatar, a researcher representing Mongolia, made a speech on the topic of "Population of Asiatic wild asses in Mongolia and protection issues".
The size of the distribution area of Asiatic wild ass is about 360,000 km2, and it is 72% of the distribution area of Mongolia's Gobi. Mongolia's Asiatic wild ass migrates over an area of up to 70,000 km2 in a year, and it ranks first in the world among terrestrial animals in terms of migration distance.
According to recent research, there are about 89,000 Asiatic wild asses in Mongolia, which is about 90% of the total in the world. In recent years, mining, roads and railways have been developing intensively in the southern area of Mongolian Gobi, where the Asiatic wild asses live.
The development of mining has a negative impact by degrading the habitat of the Asiatic wild asses and restricting the movement of grazing. The countries where Asiatic wild asses live jointly developed a regional protection plan in 2023, in which Mongolia took a leading role.
