One in five people are smokers

World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31.

Tobacco caused morbidity and mortality is high in Mongolia. In the last 10 years, tobacco caused cardiovascular mortality is doubled. According to the statistic, one in three people die from heart disease while one in five people die from cancer. All of these diseases are caused by smoking.

Smoking is the most popular and primary factor affecting the morbidity and mortality in the world.

Accoding to the research conducted in 2013, 27 percent of the total population of Mongolia are smokers while 49 percent of men are smoking while 5 percent of women are smoking. In other words, one in five people are smoking while one in two men are smoking in Mongolia.

For this year's World No Tobacco Day, WHO and the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control are calling on countries to get ready for plain (standardized) packaging of tobacco products.

Plain packaging refers to “measures to restrict or prohibit the use of logos, colours, brand images or promotional information on packaging other than brand names and product names displayed in a standard colour and font style (plain packaging).

The Ministry of Health and Sports expected to hold the following events to reduce the use of tobacco and to stop the teen smokers:

  • To organize training about hazards of smoking to students of the universities
  • To organize training on ways to quit smoking and tobacco to social workers of secondary schools. To organize campaign
  • To share contents through social media on hazards of smoking and ways to quit
