Australia’s National day celebrated in Mongolia

Australia Day is the official National Day of Australia. Celebrated annually on the 26th of January in celebration of Australia that reflects the nation’s diverse people. For Australians at home and abroad, it is a day to celebrate coming together and connecting with family, friends, and community to 'Reflect. Respect. Celebrate', this year’s theme.

Our national day is a time to reflect on and acknowledge our nation’s past, to learn about our national journey, including the ongoing history, traditions, and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Our First Peoples are the traditional custodians of our lands and waterways and have a fundamental role in the great Australian story – a story which began over 60,000 years ago.

Annual celebrations now reflect our diverse society and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new members of the Australian community.

Here in Mongolia, the Australian Embassy is hosting an event for Australia Day for our close partner organisations, Australians living in Mongolia, and our Australian alumni to commemorate our national day.

“We recently concluded our celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Mongolia in 2022 and are now celebrating the 30th anniversary of our Australia Awards Program in Mongolia. The Embassy and the Australia Awards in Mongolia is excited to celebrate our more than 700 Mongolian Australia Awards alumni. As our very first major event for 2023, Australia Day is a perfect day to gather friends of Australia to celebrate not only Australia, but our strong people-to-people ties with Mongolia,” said Ms Katie Smith, Australian Ambassador to Mongolia.
